Emmy Markoglou

Senior Communications Executive

World Bank Group, United States

Speaker Bio

For more than two decades, Emmy has led global positioning strategies for the World Bank Group, the Greek government, and the Olympic Games, living and working in Europe, the U.S., Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Over the past four years, she oversaw regional communications and external relations at IFC, a member of the World Bank Group and the largest development institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets. She covered volatile environments across the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, expanding the organization’s influence in international development, including empowering women entrepreneurs and mobilizing impact investments from the Gulf. In previous roles, Emmy advised global leaders on establishing national, corporate, and personal brands, including Greece’s former Minister of Economy and Finance, contributing to a shift in the global narrative on the Greek economy; and IFC’s former COO and interim CEO, helping position her among the world’s ‘Top 100 Women Executives.’ Emmy also led the World Bank's global positioning on energy and extractives, managed IFC's advocacy campaign on social inclusion across East Asia and the Pacific, and founded SUSTAIN, IFC’s award-winning thought leadership platform spotlighting sustainability solutions for businesses. Earlier in her career, she managed international media relations at the Athens Olympics and produced a country report on Nigeria for Foreign Affairs, the magazine of the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations. From managing major reputational risks to securing prime placements in the world's leading media and driving far-reaching online campaigns using AI-powered tools, Emmy’s expertise lies in delivering strategies that build credibility and influence decisions on the world stage. Emmy is a Fulbright Scholar and holds a BA in Sociology from the American College of Greece and an MSc from Boston University, both with distinction. She has completed the Prince of Wales's Business & Sustainability Program at Cambridge and executive programs at Cornell, Harvard, and NYU.
