Speaker Bio

Emmy Markoglou oversees regional communications and external relations for the World Bank Group across the Middle East and Central Asia, advising on strategies that expand the organization’s influence in international development, including mobilizing impact investments from the Gulf, creating jobs, and increasing opportunities for women and entrepreneurs in emerging markets. She also manages reputational risks during one of the region’s most turbulent times.

Previously, over a global career spanning more than 20 years, Emmy held different leadership roles across the World Bank Group, the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, and the Greek government, living and working in Europe, the U.S., Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. She advised global leaders and C-suite executives on establishing national, corporate, and personal brands, including Greece’s former Minister of Economy and Finance and the former COO and interim CEO of IFC, the World Bank Group’s private sector arm.

In addition, she led the World Bank's global positioning on energy and extractives, managed IFC's advocacy campaign on social inclusion across East Asia and the Pacific, and founded SUSTAIN, an award-winning World Bank Group thought leadership platform featuring innovative sustainability solutions for businesses. Earlier in her career, she managed international media relations at the Athens Olympics and produced a country report on Nigeria for Foreign Affairs, the magazine of the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations.

Emmy is a Fulbright Scholar and holds a BA in Sociology from the American College of Greece and an MSc from Boston University, both with distinction. She has completed the Prince of Wales's Business & Sustainability Program at Cambridge and executive programs in leadership and communications at Cornell, Harvard, and NYU.
