Ilias Tsakiris is Chair of the Ocean Hull Committee of the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI), the first Greek marine insurance executive to hold that position in the organisation's history. He is also a Council Member of IUMI, a member of the Salvage Forum, and engages regularly with the relevant committees of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS).
In his capacity as Chair, Mr. Tsakiris leads international discussions on hull and machinery risks, market developments, and the emerging challenges facing the global shipping industry. His work addresses the intersection of geopolitics, trade, and risk, encompassing market cycles, claims inflation, regulatory pressures, and the operational realities faced by shipowners and crews worldwide.
With a career spanning more than three decades, he brings a rare combination of seafaring, technical, and underwriting experience. He began his professional life at sea as a Deck Officer before moving to the London insurance market as an average adjuster. He is widely regarded as the only dedicated marine hull and machinery underwriter operating in Greece and is Chief Executive Officer of Hellenic Hull Management, a specialist marine underwriting platform based in Greece and Cyprus, with long-standing partnerships with the American Club and SiriusPoint.
He holds a degree in Maritime Studies from Liverpool John Moores University and is a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy of Hydra. He is co-creator and lecturer of the IUMI Hull Masterclass and holds Memoranda of Understanding with the World Maritime University, the University of Piraeus, and the University of the Aegean. He also contributes to discussions at Bayes Business School. Recognised twice by Lloyd's List among the most influential figures in marine insurance, reflecting his contribution to industry thought leadership and his role in shaping the conversation around risk in a rapidly changing global environment.
