Emmanouela (Emmy) Markoglou

Speaker Bio

For over two decades, Emmy has been leading communications and advocacy strategies for the Olympic Games, the Greek government, and the World Bank Group (WBG). Her expertise lies at the nexus of strategic communications, sustainability, and private sector development. Emmy has worked in the U.S., Nigeria, Russia, Vietnam, Greece, and Jordan, consistently leveraging the power of communications to drive positive, large-scale impact. Currently, Emmy leads regional communications at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the WBG and the largest development institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets. In this role, she covers highly volatile places across the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, focusing on a wide range of issues such as women’s empowerment, refugees, startups, and impact investments from the Gulf. Previously she spearheaded WBG’s global and regional communications on sustainability-related topics. She led WBG’s global positioning on energy and extractives, managed IFC’s advocacy campaign on social inclusion across East Asia and the Pacific;and founded ‘SUSTAIN’, a global platform for promoting cutting-edge sustainable solutions for businesses. Throughout her career, Emmy has managed highly sensitive reputational issues, engaged with top tier media, drove targeted social media campaigns, led diverse teams, and served as a strategic communications advisor to global leaders and top executives including Greece’s Minister of Economy and Finance, the President of the Athens Olympics, and the head of IFC. Emmy is a Fulbright scholar and holds a B.A. in Sociology and a M.Sc. in Communications with distinction from New York University and Boston University. She has also completed the Prince of Wales’s “Business and Sustainability” program at the University of Cambridge.
