Dr. Christoph von Marschall is Chief Diplomatic Correspondent of “Der Tagesspiegel”, the leading daily in Berlin, and a frequent guest on TV and radio shows. His expertise includes International Relations, Great Power Competition, the European Union with special regard to Central Eastern Europe, US Politics and Transatlantic Relations. From 2005 to 2013 he served as US Correspondent and Washington Bureau Chief. Her returned to the US to report from the Presidential campaign 2016, during Donald Trumps first term 2017/18, the US elections 2020 and 2024 and the start of Trumps second term 2025. During the presidencies of George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Donald Trump again he was a member of the White House Press Corps. He wrote biographies of Barack Obama (2007) and Michelle Obama (2009), a book on differences in political culture between the US and Germany (2012, updated edition 2026) and two books on the challenges for Germany in the changing world order: “Wir verstehen die Welt nicht mehr. Deutschlands Entfremdung von seinen Freunden”, 2018 (“We don’t understand the world anymore. Germany’s estrangement from its friends”). “Schwarzer Dienstag. Warum ein Krieg mit Russland droht und wie die Bundesregierung ihn verhindern kann“, 2025 („Black Tuesday. Why a war with Russia is imminent, and how the Federal Government can avoid it”). 2017/18 he was the inaugural Helmut Schmidt Fellow of the Zeit Foundation and the German Marshall Fund of the US, based in Washington DC. 2024/25 he worked again in Washington DC as Global Europa Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center. Born October 8, 1959 in Freiburg, he studied East European History and Political Science in Freiburg, Mainz and Cracow (Poland), concluding with a PhD on Polish history in 1988 at Freiburg University. In 1989/90 he covered for “Süddeutsche Zeitung” the peaceful regime changes in Central Eastern Europe. Since 1991 he works for “Der Tagesspiegel”, Berlin, first in the newsroom and 1995 to 2005 as Editorial Page Editor”.
