Thanos Pallis is Professor in Port & Maritime Economics & Policy, and holder of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Port Policy at the Department of Maritime Studies, University of Piraeus, Greece. He is also the Vice-Chair of the global Port Performance Research Network (PPRN), and founding member & co-director of PortEconomics. He is a member of the International Association of Ports & Harbours (IAPH) Risk and Resilience and Cruise Committees and co-author of the IAPH World Ports Tracker. The immediate past President of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME), Thanos was a Fulbright Scholar (2008-11) at Columbia University, New York, US, and, beyond Greece, held professorships in Canada, Colombia, the US, and Hong Kong. He has worked to shape ports and maritime logistics across all continents. A regular advisor to the European Commission, national governments, and European ports on port issues, he served as Secretary-General of MedCruise (2013-17), the association representing over 100 cruise ports in 20 countries in the Mediterranean. In Greece, Thanos served as General Secretary for Ports & Port Policy at the Ministry of Development, Competitiveness and Shipping of the Hellenic Republic. His books include European Port Policy;the Common EU Maritime Transport Policy, Maritime Transport: The Greek Paradigm (in English, 2007), Port Economy (in Greek, 2023) and Port Economics, Management and Policy (in English and Greek, 2022, 2nd edition: 2026). In 2025, he was listed among the top 2% of most-cited scholars in transportation and logistics.
