Dimitris Avramopoulos

Speaker Bio

Dimitris Avramopoulos is a Greek politician and Member of the Hellenic Parliament who served as European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs, and Citizenship (2014–2019). Over the course of his career, he has held several senior ministerial positions in the Greek government, including Minister of National Defence (two terms), Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Health and Social Solidarity, and Minister of Tourism. He also served two consecutive terms as Mayor of Athens. Before entering politics, Mr. Avramopoulos pursued a diplomatic career, holding key posts such as Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Director of the Diplomatic Cabinet of the Prime Minister, Consul of Greece in Liège, Consul General in Geneva, and Representative to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) in Vienna. He studied Public Law and Political Science at the University of Athens and completed postgraduate studies in European Studies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. His academic contributions have been recognized with honorary doctorates from leading universities in New York, Philadelphia, and London (Adelphi, Drexel, Kingston, Deree), as well as honorary professorships at institutions including the School of International Studies at Peking University and the European College of Parma.
